... MODERN FOODS SOLD IN THE SUPERMARKET ARE NOT MORE THAN A COCKTAIL OF CHEMICAL...
hello everyone.. i think i m too late to have my personal page on this interesting WIKI, but i do hope this is a good starting for me and other friends who still haven't have a page on wiki.
( read the tutorial on how to make a link and personal page.. it is useful!)
i think i will have my very 1st writing in wiki on the topic that given by prof.karim that is " Modern foods sold in the supermarket are not more than a cocktail of chemicals"
First of all, i would like to give a definition of food. Food is usually known as any substances that is or can be consumed by living organisms especially by eating in order to sustain life.
Whereas, what is chemical? In short, chemical means related to chemistry. It is a science of matter; the branch of natural sciences dealing with the composition of substances and their properties and reactions.
So, after knowing the definitions about food and chemical... what do u think about the statement?
Personally, i feel this is a very argumentative statement. Either you are agreeing or not.. there will be a lots of points to elaborate and i strongly feel there is no specific answer of it But i would like to elaborate some of my point of view on "Modern foods sold in the supermarket are not more than a cocktail of chemicals". I am agree with the statement. I will show some simple example on why the food available now are consider as a cocktail of chemical.
Go along the food department in any supermarket, we have all kinds of food that is cheap and easy.Manufacturers face strong competitions with each other. To promote their food to you, the food need to be attractive. Or in simple word, what kind of food makes you feel very pleasant to buy?
For me, as a consumer like anyone of you , i think the food must have attractions and of course good flavor ( taste ). For the manufacturer, a longer shelf life food is preferable.
But what makes the food be attractive? having good flavor and having longer shelf life? The answer is -- chemical substances make it!
In order to attract the consumers, color of the food play important role. Coloring additives are added to make the food colorful and attractive. Most of the natural color of food lost during the process, so, color additives are needed. For example we have tartrazine E102 or FDC yellow 5. It is a SYNTHETIC lemon yellow azodye used in pudding, cakes, jams, sauces, and jelly. Also, we have Brilliant Blue E133 which makes blue color in foods and do you ever think of how to makes a green color in food? It is a combination of tartrazine and Brilliant Blue make a green colouring in foods! These coloring agent are found to be related to hyperactive behavior among children, and it is said that the brilliant blue colouring agent can induce allergic and even asthma.
Secondly, flavor of the food. For a food to have flavor, flavoring agent are added. Flavoring agent are usually aroma compound that has a smell and odor. For example, we have Limonene which have a similar flavor as orange, octyacetate and fructone which have apple or pineapple like smell. And i personally feel amazing of it, strawberry flavor comes from a chemical called Furaneol. ( i personally hate the strawberry flavor foods in markets). From some of the study, it is found that limonene and its oxidation products are skin and respiratory irritants.
Lastly, for a food to stand longer time on the shelf, preservatives are added. I think most of you know about benzoic acid, it is added to food so that the growth of some microb, moulds and yeast can be inhibited. But very unfortunately, benzoic acid is one of the substance that known as carcinogenic as well as a preservatives.
So, when a food is available in the market, it must have the 3 simple characteristic stated above, and it is just a chemical work done on it. I believe there are much more chemical substances are used to create more pleasant tasting or for other purposes. But, bear in mind that we , as a consumers, we choose food wisely.
